Participants: Diploma and Master students.

First lecture: The first lecture will be held on Monday 17th of October 2005.

Schedule: This lecture consists of 3hrs lecturing and 1h seminar per week. The seminar will be held every second week on Mondays. The first seminar will be on October 31st.

Examination: There will be a written examination (3h) at the end of term. In addition active participation in the seminars is expected.

Credits: 6 LP (5 LP lecture, 1 LP seminar)

Lecture contents: The lecture focuses on modern synthetic methods in organic chemistry with a main emphasize on metal organic chemistry. This includes aspects of strategic synthetic planning including principles of retrosynthetic analysis and protecting group strategies. In the course of this lecture all metals and metal catalysts relevant to modern synthesis will be discussed in systematic order. Each subgroup will be complemented by recent synthetic applications including natural product and drug syntheses. Multi-step syntheses of complex target molecules will be discussed and analyzed. For each metal (or metal-organic catalyst) preparation, structure and reactivity will be discussed aiming at a detailed understanding of the principles and potentials of modern metal-organic chemistry.
The seminar will address specific questions of metal-organic chemistry (problem-sets) and is aimed to supplement the content of the lecture and consolidate the acquired knowledge.
