1.1 Installation and Configuration (systems on SolarisTM )

The general procedure I recommend to install a new machine to run Vnmr(J) is:

Install the hardware:
better prefere to have two network cards, one for the your LAN, and other to talk to the Varian\textregistered console.
Install SolarisTM :
insert the CD/DVD and follow the instructions.
Tips and non-trivial things: you will need a lot of space for installing system patches, which go to /var/sadm/patches. If you have enough space, reserve at least 2GB to the / partition, since this partition cannot be enlarged later.1. You can alternatively create a symbolic link from this directory to, say, /export/home/patches. As well, other directories in the / partition can be moved to a larger one with an accompaining symbolic link if you experience space restrictions in /. But avoid doing that for directories needed at boot time, like /sbin, /bin, /var or /usr.
Install SolarisTM patches:
get the newest ones at www.sun.com $\rightarrow$ \fbox{dowloads} $\rightarrow$ \fbox{Patches \& Updates}.
Install Vnmr(J):
Just insert the CD/DVD. If your are running smserverd through inetd (this is system default), the media will be read and a browse window will pop up. Just click \fbox{load.nmr} (or run manually this script). Details on how to answer the questios are in the manuals.
Configure the Computer-Console Network:
The network configuration for the console is included in the Vnmr(J) installation procedure. If not you can run the script /vnmr/bin/setacq as root and answer the questions. The following question
Are the NMR console and Sun computer attached to a firewall-router, y/n? [n]:
Asks if you have any hardware doing firewall or routing between the computers network card and the console. As it was suggested here, the conection should be through a direct cabeling between both. Then just \fbox{ENTER} (ie [n] is correct). The same is right for the second question (if you have direct cabeling):
                        Select from the options below:
                        1. Your SUN is attached to the console via the standard ethernet port
                        2. Your SUN is attached to the console via the second ethernet port.
What is your configuration? (1 or 2) [2]:

Obs: If you do not use automatization like spinning, temperature, sample exchange control etc per software, then comment the line with the address for auto services (eg inovaauto for inova consoles in /etc/hosts and in /etc/hosts.equiv.

Now you should create the user acqproc. It runs a set of deamons necessary for the communication between the console and computer. Just type /vnmr/bin/makesuacqproc. You can then from any user start and stop these deamons by typing at the Unix\textregistered Prompt su acqproc. You can use this command, for example, when the communitcation is broken due to a blackout, when for any reason the acqstat window shows inactive instead of idle etc.

Configure your VnmrTM System:
from the Vnmr(J) prompt type config. Do that as vnmr1 user and set all configuration according to your system. Some non-obvious remarks about these settings: In ``Coarse Attenuator'' you should set the upper limit minus lower limit. For example, it the attenuator ranges from -16 to +63dB, you should set this option to 79dB. In ``Upper Limit'' set 63dB, according to this example. Fine Attenuator is always present. ``Type of Amplifier'' is explained in more details in the Manuals. You can also control this setting through the variable amptype. If it does not exist, you can create it by typing create('amptype','flag') amptype='ab', for example.

Post install configuration:
I suggest you to, immediately after installation, perform the procedures described in the Section 1.2 in order to enhance the security of your system.
