"Low-Temperature Liquid and Solid State NMR-spectroscopy of

Hydrogen Transfer Systems"

The Research Group Instrumental Analytic Chemistry

(AG Prof. H.H. Limbach)

The research group Instrumental Analytic Chemistry of the Institute of Chemistry of the Freie Universitaet Berlin has been chosen as a Marie Curie Training site for experimental and theoretical methods of low-temperature Liquid 1H and Solid state 2H Nuclear magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.

These methods are used to Study the mobility and activation of hydrogen in and by transition metal hydrides, either dissolved in Liquefied deuterated gases or in the solid state. The goals of this work is to provide an understanding of the mechanistic details of various chemical reactions catalyzed by transition metal complexes.
The research fellows will be introduced in the use of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in the area of transition metal catalysts and hydrogen bonded complexes. NMR is one of the most important and universally applicable techniques in physics, chemistry, biology and medicine.

Several liquid and solid state NMR spectrometers , including a new 600 MHz solid state
wide-bore quadruple resonance spectrometer, are available.

The following stages will be trained in the program:

(1) Preparation of sealed samples of air-sensitive compounds stored under hydrogen under different degrees of deuteration. Preparation of solid samples, or samples dissolved in liquefied deuterated gases.

(2) Training in multinuclear and Multidimensional low-temperature liquid and solid state NMR using high-resolution and broadband NMR pulse techniques.

(3) Calculation of spectra using the Liouville density matrix approach.

(4) Evaluation of the data using theoretical methods.
