Welcome to this site. You will find information on the nuclear envelope, on my past research projects and publications resulting from these projects, and on my teaching assignments - past and present - at the Freie Universität Berlin.
Currently, I am involved in coordinating collective research activities around biological membranes at the Freie Universität Berlin, involving research institutions in Berlin and Potsdam.

The nuclear envelope (NE) is the main focus of my research projects since many years. When we started to investigate putative signalling processes involving protein phosphorylation, which are implemented at the nuclear envelope, it became evident that we only barely knew proteins specifically located at the nuclear envelope. Therefore, we first tackled the identification of proteins at the nuclear envelope and its substructures with a protein-chemistry approach (nuclear-envelope proteomics). Among other NE proteins, we identified as a nuclear-envelope protein the 45 kDa integral membrane protein LUMA, which we characterized in more detail. At the same time, we followed up phosphorylation, particularly the tyrosine phosphorylation of nuclear-envelope proteins.
Fom 1993 to 1996 I joined Reinhard Jahn's lab at the Yale Medical School. There I had the opportunity to work on the interaction of the SNARE proteins syntaxin, SNAP-25 and synaptobrevin forming the SNARE complex, which drives synaptic vesicle exocytosis upon activation of the calcium trigger implemented by synaptotagmin.
