This is a listing of DTDs or other specifications used to prepare the Compendium of HTML Elements. The accuracy of the Compendium is only as good as these documents but no more reliable source can be found -- yet.

HTML+
The information on HTML+ was taken from a "HTML + Discussion Document" dated November 8, 1993 and written by David Raggett of Hewlett Packard Laboratories. No recommendation document could be found to provide such historical information. He cites the readership of the mailing list WWW-talk as major contributors. September 1, 1997
HTML 2.0
The basis for the HTML 2.0 information was a "Request for Comments: 1866" by T. Berners-Lee and D. Connolly dated November 1995.
HTML 3.0
"HyperText Markup Language Specification Version 3.0" dated as expired on 28th September 1995 by Dave Raggett, W3C (dsr@w3.org).
HTML 3.2
"HTML 3.2 Reference Specification" "W3C Recommendation 14-Jan-1997" by Dave Raggett (dsr@w3.org). The status of the document was noted thusly: "This document has been reviewed by W3C members and other interested parties and has been endorsed by the Director as a W3C Recommendation."
HTML 4.0
"HTML 4.0 Specification" noted as "W3C Working Draft 8-July-1997 by Dave Raggett (dsr@w3.org), Arnaud Le Hors (lehors@w3.org) and Ian Jacobs (ij@W3.org).
Netscape
Microsoft Internet Explorer 2.0
Beta version 0.9 dated 3/11/96 by Mark Buckley (mbuckley@microsoft.com). He states "This markup is based as much as possible on the DTD for HTML 2.0 published in the 12/95 IETF working draft. Table markup is based on the table DTD included in the HTML 3 DTD, not the 12/95 tables draft."
Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0
Version 0.9 Date: 11/7/96 by Mark Buckley (mbuckley@microsoft.com). He states: "This markup is based as much as possible on the DTD for HTML 3.2 published by W3C (also known as the Wilbur DTD), dated 5/31/96.
