The <embed> tag is a creation of Netscape to load sound files or files of any unsupported media. The HTML 4.0 equivalent is the <object> tag.

Each example on this page will load a sound file. There are four different types and each are represented so you can test your system's ability to handle all four. In addition, each of the attributes is also presented, each in a slightly different scenario.

Note: your ISP will have to add the correct MIME types to his server. He will need to load '.wav: "audio/wav"' and '.mid: "audio/midi"'.

"... But if you try it with pages loaded off of your local hard drive (or a properly configured web server), the embed tag works correctly. The reason (it doesn't work) is that your server returns a MIME type of "application/octet-stream" for .mid and .wav files. The correct MIME types for .wav files appears to be "audio/wav" while for .mid files it's "audio/midi". Once someone updates the MIME types for the server to support .mid and .wav files, then embedding sound files should work correctly."

EXAMPLE - loads a 154,538 byte *.aif sound file.

align=
WebTV 0.9 1.2
forces the alignment of the surrounding text with the image.

EXAMPLE - loads a 112,281 byte *.au sound file. "absbottom" "absmiddle" "baseline" "bottom"
WebTV 0.9 1.2
this forces the adjacent line of text to start aligned with the bottom of the image and subsequent lines to wrap below the image. "left"
WebTV 0.9 1.2
this inserts the image on the left of the window and wraps the text around to the right. In this instance, the paragraph is left intact as it wraps around the image. There is no extra white space between lines of the text. See also BR CLEAR. "middle" this forces the adjacent line of text to be aligned with the middle of the image. The next line would continue below the image. "right"
WebTV 0.9 1.2
this forces the image flush right and wraps the text around the image on the left. See also BR CLEAR. "testtop" "top"
WebTV 0.9 1.2
causes the text to be aligned with the top of the image. It continues across the window and the next line begins on the line below the image. autostart= in the case of an audio clip, if true, causes the audio clip to start when the file is finished downloading

EXAMPLE - loads a 154,388 byte *.wav sound file
"false" the reader must click on the play button to hear the sound clip "true" causes the player to begin playing when the file is finished downloading. border=
WebTV 0.9 1.2
specifies the size, in pixels, of the border around the applet in pixels. controls=
Netscape icon 1.1 2.0 3.0 4.0
when control is not specified, the default appears to be the "console" argument "console" EXAMPLE - loads a 23,650 byte *.mid sound file.
"false"
Netscape icon 1.1 2.0 3.0 4.0
This is a possible argument to the "controls=" attribute in Netscape 1.1n. "smallconsole" EXAMPLE - loads a 51,852 byte *.mid sound file.
"true"
Netscape icon 1.1 2.0 3.0 4.0
This is a possible argument to the "controls=" attribute in Netscape 1.1n. frameborder=
WebTV 0.9 1.2
"NO" specifies that the frame has no border. height=
Netscape icon 1.1 2.0 3.0 4.0
MSIE icon 1.0 2.0 3.0 4.0
Opera 1.0 2.1 3.0
WebTV 0.9 1.2
sets the height of an embedded object i.e. a controller for audio.

EXAMPLE - loads an 8,195 byte *.mid sound file
hidden=
Opera 1.0 2.1 3.0
WebTV 0.9 1.2
This attribute causes the console to be hidden from view. "false" forces the console to be visible in the browser screen. "true" causes the console (small or large) to be hidden. This must be combined with the "autostart=" attribute above. hspace=
Netscape icon 1.1 2.0 3.0 4.0
WebTV 0.9 1.2
"... specifies a margin in pixels between the left and 4right edges of the applet and surrounding text and images." (Netscape) loop= causes the clip to be played endlessly according to the arguments below - I will spare you the loop attribute. "true" sets the loop attribute to "true" forcing the clip to play endlessly "false" sets the loop attribute to "false" forcing the reader to click on the "play" button of the console to hear the clip. name=
MSIE icon 1.0 2.0 3.0 4.0
WebTV 0.9 1.2
the argument here is "appletname" and it specifies the name of the applet. (Netscape) optional parameter=
WebTV 0.9 1.2
"Defines any parameters that are specific to the object (for example, AUTOSTART and PLAYBACK)." (WebTV 1.2 DTD)

WebTV credit Netscape but does not specify a version number. There is no corroborating evidence for this attribute.

palette=
WebTV 0.9 1.2
"... is relevant only on the Windows platform. A value of "foreground" makes the palette used by the plug-in be the foreground palette. Similarly, a value of "background" makes the plug-in use the background palette, which is also the default. (Netscape) param=
MSIE icon 1.0 2.0 3.0 4.0
pluginspage=
WebTV 0.9 1.2
the argument stipulates "the URL that contains the instructions for installing the plug-in. This URL used by the assisted installation process if the plug-in registered for the MIME type of this EMBED tag is not found. (Netscape) src=
Netscape icon 1.1 2.0 3.0 4.0
MSIE icon 1.0 2.0 3.0 4.0
Opera 1.0 2.1 3.0
WebTV 0.9 1.2
indicates the source of a sound file.

EXAMPLE - loads an 8,195 byte *.mid sound file
type=
Opera 1.0 2.1 3.0
WebTV 0.9 1.2
The argument is "MIMEtype" "...specifies the MIME type of the EMBED tag, which in turn determines which plug-in to load. Use TYPE instead of SRC for plug-ins registered for the MIME type of the EMBED tag is not found. (Netscape) units=
Opera 1.0 2.1 3.0
WebTV 0.9 1.2
"Defines the measurement unit used by the HEIGHT and WIDTH attributes. Possible values include en (half the typical point size) and pixels. The default value is pixels." (WebTV 1.2 DTD)

WebTV credits Netscape for this attribute but there is no corroborating information. They do not credit a specific version of Netscape.

volume= in the case of an audio clip, sets the volume level. i.e. 'volume="100"'. I can only assume that the value is expressed in percentage of the volume setting of the reader's system.

EXAMPLE - loads an 8,195 byte *.mid sound file with volume="50"

EXAMPLE - loads an 8,195 byte *.mid sound file with volume="100
vspace=
Netscape icon 1.1 2.0 3.0 4.0
WebTV 0.9 1.2
like "hspace" above, vspace controls the space around an image. "Vspace" adds the top and bottom margins. Unlike borders, however, "vspace" does not take a hyperlink colour when it is a link anchor. width=
Netscape icon 1.1 2.0 3.0 4.0
MSIE icon 1.0 2.0 3.0 4.0
Opera 1.0 2.1 3.0
WebTV 0.9 1.2
sets the width of an embedded object i.e. a controller for audio.

EXAMPLE - loads an 8,195 byte *.mid sound file
