Sandia Reference

This has been deprecated in favour of
.
causes the text to be centered between the existing margins. The margins can be the default page margins or any artificial implementation; i.e. tables.
"The CENTER element is a Netscape 1.1 extension. It was provided as an alternative to the HTML+ and Version 3 "align=center" proposed new attribute for all the text block elements such as the
and <Hn> header elements and the new
element. Both RFC 1866 and the current Version 3 specification only include the ALIGN attribute, but not the CENTER element, and Netscape 2.0 has added the "align="center"" attribute.
It must be noted that many browsers are now supporting "align=center". Some are supporting
and "align=center".
Example:
this text is centered between the canvas margins although it could be between table or other artificial margins.
