<bgsound> allows the creation of pages with background sounds. These sounds can be either .wav or .au format or Midi (.mid) format.

"aiff" is also supported, however, it is undocumented. Preston Onkst has tested it.

You might also look at <sound> (Mosaic) and <embed> (Netscape) for further examples of implementing sound files. You might also look at the sounds page.

Microsoft, in its implementation of <bgsound> does not consider that the user should have much control over its presentation. When the tag is read by the browser, it begins the download of the music file. When the file is completely downloaded, it executes the plug-in and begins reproducing the file immediately.

this attribute allows the sound file to be repeated.
Note: In their explanation, WebTV stipulates that "the loop attribute is implemented as defined in Microsoft Internet Explorer." But they make no mention of the arguments below, nor does their example imply that the arguments are necessary.
"n" stipulates that the file will be repeated n times
Example: <bgsound src="noise.wav" loop="3">
"infinite" continuously repeats the sound file for as long as the page is active.
Example: <bgsound src="noise.au" loop="infinite">

this is the "source" of the sound file. The sound file is treated the same as an image file and thus requires a filename or URL.
<bgsound src="bbbshort.mid"> This file is 8,195 bytes.

this is for video clips and specifies when the file should start playing. This is the default. Both argument values can be specified together. The MSIE 3.0 DTD specifies that this attribute functions with this tag but fails to provide any form of argument. The arguments here are from the <img> tag and are a possible guide as to what arguments would be feasable.

"fileopen" when the file is completed downloading and is open this argument starts the file running.
"mouseover" This argument only starts the video running when the reader moves the mouse cursor over the animation.
