This tag and related attributes are deprecated in favour of Cascading Style Sheets.

The basefont is used to establish a default font size. Once the default font size is established, the <font> tag then sets the font size relative to the basefont size. The <BASEFONT size="n> tag sets a maximum font size of 7 and a minimum of 1 with 7 being the largest font that can be created. No combination of basefont and font settings will exceed 7 or be less than 1. The browsers will not accept it.

The basefont tag must always be put at the beginning of the body of the page. If this is not done, strange things will happen.

Example: Follow this link for a demonstration of <basefont>.
