Our research programs are directed to electron and photon induced reactions in molecules under different degrees of aggregation, namely

  1. gas phase molecules,
  2. clusters and
  3. adsorbed and condensed molecules.
We use targets of very different size and complexity ranging from diatomic or triatomic molecules (O2, O3, OClO, etc.) to large molecules like DNA and RNA bases. The main interest is focused towards processes where molecular anions are generated, either by attachment of free electrons of well defined energy or the transfer of bound electrons to the molecular system of interest.

Although our research programs are primarily focused towards basic science they are directly related to

  1. atmospheric and stratospheric chemistry,
  2. plasma processing,
  3. surface modification,
  4. radiation damage in biomolecules and operation of radiosensitizers in tumor specific radiotherapie.

We have direct collaborations to leading groups all over the world (including industral cooperations) and are a member of the new European Network EPIC (electron and proton induced chemistry). The experimental methods and techniques include crossed electron/molecular beams experiments, and experiments under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) conditions to study processes in adsorbed and condensed molecules.
